While reflectors perform very well in the majority of applications there are a few special cases where the focus is placed on different figures of merit. Light-emitting diodes pose some unique challenges when it comes to glare-free lighting designs.
Auer's non-glare line was implemented in the hybrid reflector-lens "Jupiter". It combines the benefits of a facetted reflector with the ability of a lens to influence and guide all light. Further advantage of the non-glare line is the excellent suppression of the halo-effect.
Although the light passes an additional lens the system remains very efficient with a total transmission of up to 90 %.
Besides the optical benefits this hybrid approach also results in a full encapsulation of the LED to the front. This might be advantageous in some more hazardous working environments or just simplifies the cleaning process.
